Comedy Conversation with Suzi Barrett
MON, July 26 – 18:00 Main Hall

We start with our most unusual of the comedy conversation of the series, an uninhibited and hilarious interview of Suzi Barrett by Boom Chicago CEO Saskia Maas.

Suzi is a very funny actress and writer with a varied career. One one hand she is a children’s TV star (well ‘tween’ TV star) from Disney shows Just Roll With It and Kirby Buckets. On the other hand she is responsible for numerous episodes of Comedy Central’s Drunk history. In between she wrote our fascinating planet (with Demetri Martin) appeared on How I Met Your MotherComedy Bang Bang and millions of commercials, strangely, for two different car insurance companies.

She played at Boom Chicago from 2003-7, creating and starring in shows like Why Aren’t You Happy Yet? and Bite the Bullet. That was the era with Heather Anne Campbell (Rick and Morty), Matt Jones (Breaking Bad), Tarik Davis (Amber Ruffin Show), and Amber Ruffin (Yep, the Amber Ruffin Show).

These days she is also known for her work with Aero Farms which ties into her (and Saskia’s and Boom Chicago’s) interest in Autism.

Her feature length film Best Summer Ever premiered at the SXSW film festival this spring, up-ending the way that disability is usually portrayed in pop culture. Full of disabled characters, the film isn’t about disabilities. Rather the film is about love, identity and following your heart….

The conversation continues with a panel discussion about Possibilities not Limitations for people with autism with Marcia Goddard who is the head of People and Culture from Tony’s Chocolonely.

A Comedy Conversation with Suzi Barrett is on Monday, July 26, live from Boom Chicago at 18:00. The show including Possibilities not Limitations will also be presented as a high quality live stream at 18:00 Amsterdam |17:00 London |12:00 New York | 11:00 Chicago | 9:00 Los Angeles.

Comedy Conversation with Seth Meyers
TUES, July 27 – 18:00 Main Hall

Seth Meyers wearing a suit and tie smiling at the camera

Boom founders Andrew Moskos and Saskia Maas interview their good friend Seth Meyers live from the Rozengracht with a live audience and atmosphere. Seth joins live from New York. Watch in person or on the high quality livestream.

Seth Meyers has only had two employers: NBC and Boom Chicago. After a successful run of Pickups and Hiccups in Amsterdam and Edinburgh, the Boom Chicago show was mounted in Chicago where he was scouted and hired by Saturday Night Live in 2001. He was named Head Writer in 2006. In 2011, he won an Emmy with Justin Timberlake for a song they wrote.

In 2014, he was hired for Late Night with Seth Meyers, and quickly became one of the funniest and most thought-provoking hosts on late night TV. His sharp interviews are legendary. His series ‘A Closer Look’ series influences political discussion in the US and his covid-era shows from his house were a creative triumph. Seth’s hysterical Lobby Baby was one of the most watched comedy specials on Netflix that year. His production company produces The Amber Ruffin Show, the Boom Chicago alum who is also the first black woman to host a late night TV show.

In 2011, Seth brought the house down at the White House Correspondents Dinner skewering, among others, Donald Trump. Many people say he and Barack Obama inadvertently inspired Trump to run for the presidency on that day.

At Boom Chicago, he wrote, performed and directed. Seth also was the first corporate show writer in what would become the successful Boom Chicago for Business. He is still a fan of Amsterdam, Ajax and the Dutch national football team.

A Comedy Conversation with Seth Meyers is on Tuesday, July 27, live from Boom Chicago at 18:00. The show will also be presented as a high quality live stream at 18:00 Amsterdam |17:00 London |12:00 New York | 11:00 Chicago | 9:00 Los Angeles.

A Comedy Conversation with Colton Dunn
WED, July 28 – 18:00 Main Hall

Join us for a fun and funny hour with actor, writer, producer and Boom Chicago alum Colton Dunn. The interview, audience and the atmosphere happen on the Rozengracht with a live audience and atmosphere. Colton joins from Los Angeles. Watch in person or on the high quality livestream.

From 2002-4, Colton lived in Amsterdam and performed at Boom Chicago, working on shows like Rock Stars and Boom Chicago saves the world, (Sorry About the Mess). That was the era with, among othersJordan Peele, Brendan Hunt, Suzi Barrett, Heather Campbell, and Jim Woods.

Colton just finished up a very successful six season run as Garett on the NBC comedy Superstore. One of the network’s highest rated shows, the workplace comedy found its footing in the second year when it garnered critical acclaim, getting 100% positive remarks on Rotten Tomatoes. ‘Superstore …stakes its claim as one of the most lovable ensembles on television, fleshing out its charming cast while expertly teasing out its central romance.’ It did not receive a prominent run in the Netherlands for some reason.

Colton has written and acted on many shows including Key & Peele, Parks and Recreation, MADtv, and was the scene stealing Rudy the limo driver in Blockers.

We will cover many topics with a focus on his experiences in Amsterdam and in Hollywood.

A Comedy Conversation with Colton Dunn is on Wednesday, July 28, live from Boom Chicago at 18:00. The show will also be presented as a high quality live stream at 18:00 Amsterdam |17:00 London |12:00 New York | 11:00 Chicago | 9:00 Los Angeles.

A Comedy Conversation with
Ike Barinholtz and Josh Meyers
THURS, July 29 – 18:00 Main Hall

Ike Barinholtz and Josh Meyers are two very funny people, who became friends at Boom Chicago and remain so to this day. At the 10 Year Boom Chicago anniversary, he and Ike developed The Shizzow where they would honestly try to annoy each other and then get into an actual fistfight. Comedy gold. They will be interviewed by Boom Chicago founders Andrew Moskos and Jon Rosenfeld who were in the cast with them in the old days.

Ike Barinholtz is an actor, comedian, writer, director, and producer. On TV, he had a big role in the long running The Mindy Project. Ike has appeared in many movies like Suicide Squad, Blockers, The Hunt, Neighbors and Sisters. He co-wrote the action comedy film Central Intelligence for Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart and directed, wrote, produced, and starred in the comedy film The Oath.

Josh Meyers is a talented actor, writer and stand-up comedian. Upon landing at Schiphol for Boom Chicago, he was taken not to his apartment, but directly to his first show for an insurance company in Deventer. Even groggy, Josh knocked it out of the park.

After Boom replaced Topher Grace as the star in the final season of That ’70s Show and he acted in The Oath with Ike.

Josh has been a regular contributor to Jimmy Fallon as well as his brother’s show, Late Night with Seth Meyers. Josh starred in the animated superhero comedy The Awesomes and is currently working on a new science fiction comedy for the Peacock network.

A Comedy Conversation with Ike Barinholtz and Josh Meyers is on Thursday, July 29, live from Boom Chicago at 18:00. The show will also be presented as a high quality live stream at 18:00 Amsterdam |17:00 London |12:00 New York | 11:00 Chicago | 9:00 Los Angeles.

A Comedy Conversation with Kay Cannon
FRI, July 30 – 18:00 Main Hall

Kay Cannon in a blue shirt

Kay Cannon just finished writing and directing the upcoming musical comedy Cinderella for Disney, which will be in movie theaters during the festival. Arriving with high expectations, the film could crack the top 10 of highest grossing movies ever with a female director.

She received rave reviews for her debut screenplay, the 2012 acapella comedy Pitch Perfect starring Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow and Rebel Wilson. Kay then wrote and co-produced the follow-up hits Pitch Perfect 2 and Pitch Perfect 3.

Kay directed the groundbreaking Blockers in 2018 starring Boom alums Ike Barinholtz and Colton Dunn. Blockers updated the teenage sex genre for a modern era, paving the way for films like Booksmart

On TV, she was writer and producer for NBC’s 30 Rock (2007–2012), the FOX comedy series New Girl (2012–2014) and Girlboss (2017) for Netflix.

Kay performed in Boom Chicago from 1999-2001 in the era with Brendan Hunt, Liz Cackowski, Ike Barinholtz, and Jason Sudeikis. She helped create Live at the Leidseplein: Your Privacy is our Business, the first major live comedy show anywhere with (secret) cameras, screens and a video director. She also worked with Saskia Maas in Boom’s corporate show department during its infancy.

Join us for a fascinating and funny discussion of comedy, Hollywood and her time in Amsterdam with Boom Chicago owner Saskia Maas and Festival Artistic Director Stacey Smith live. A Comedy Conversation with Kay Cannon is on Friday, July 30, live from Boom Chicago at 18:00. The show will also be presented as a high quality live stream at 18:00 Amsterdam |17:00 London |12:00 New York | 11:00 Chicago | 9:00 Los Angeles.

A Comedy Conversation with Brendan Hunt
SAT, July 31 – 18:00 Main Hall

Brendan Hunt wearing a hat

Brendan Hunt, along with fellow Boom alums Jason Sudeikis and Joe Kelly, created Ted Lasso, one of the best shows on television in 2020 and the first true hit on AppleTV+.  Season two premieres during the festival on July 23 and season three has already been commissioned. The three hatched the idea for the character (and taught Jason about football) during their stint in Boom Chicago in 2000.

From 1998 to 2008, Brendan was one of Boom Chicago’s most recognizable and intense actor-writer-improvisers. In addition, he starred in Boom’s satirical news program Comedy Central News (CCN). In addition to starring in many of Boom Chicago’s main Edinburgh Fringe shows, Brendan also co-wrote and co-starred in a pair of two-man shows: Iconic Yanks with Seth Meyers and Here Comes the Neighborhood with Jordan Peele.

Brendan appeared as an occasional performer on Key & Peele and was nominated for an Emmy for his writing on the Key & Peele Super Bowl Special. He also appeared in We’re the Millers and Horrible Bosses 2 as well as in the video game Fallout 4.

A Comedy Conversation with Brendan Hunt is on Saturday, July 31, live from Boom Chicago at 18:00. The show will also be presented as a high quality live stream at 18:00 Amsterdam |17:00 London |12:00 New York | 11:00 Chicago | 9:00 Los Angeles.

A Comedy Conversation with Jordan Peele
SUN, August 1 – 18:00 Main Hall

Jordan Peele wearing glasses and looking at the camera

Jordan Peele is one of America’s most exciting writer-directors-producers. Winning an Oscar for his groundbreaking sociological-horror film Get Out, he quickly moved on to films like BlacKkKlansman, Us, and the TV anthology Twilight Zone. His upcoming films Candyman (cinemas) and Wendell and Wild (Netflix) arrive this summer with incredible expectations.

Jordan got his comedy start at Boom Chicago from 2001-2004. His first show was the critically acclaimed Europe: We’ve Created a Monster which included the famous Eurovision Song Contest character Danish Supermodel Uta. ‘Yes because…’

In 2002, he performed in Rock Stars the groundbreaking show that was also part of the Second City Stage Swap. Boom Chicago was (and remains) the only group to ever perform on Second City’s mainstage while they came to Amsterdam to perform on ours. It was there that he met Keegan Michael Key. That friendship and partnership led to the all time great sketch comedy show Key & Peele on Comedy Central from 2012 – 2015 and countless acting partnerships including in Toy Story 4, Fargo, Keanu, and the upcoming animated film Wendell and Wild.

Jordan was in two Boom Chicago Edinburgh Fringe Festival shows including Here Comes the Neighborhood with Boom alums (and future Ted Lasso creators) Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly.

We are very lucky that he will take a break from shooting his new film this summer to have a Comedy Conversation at the first BCCF.
